The chief executive officer of Data Addicts, popularly known as the Data Guru, John David, has called for a data-driven approach to tackling insecurity, warning that Nigeria cannot effectively combat crime and violence through assumptions and reactive measures.

Speaking on the country’s security challenges to journalists, the expert said kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery and communal violence continue to disrupt lives and economic activities across Nigeria.

According to him, effective security planning must be based on accurate data that helps the authorities identify crime hotspots, track emerging trends and deploy resources more efficiently.

“Nigeria cannot continue to fight insecurity blindfolded. We need accurate incident mapping, real-time reporting, trend analysis and stronger coordination among security agencies,” he said.

He said kidnapping has become a major threat to economic growth, forcing people to limit travel, reducing agricultural activities and discouraging investment.

“Insecurity is not just a security issue; it is also an economic and governance issue. When communities no longer feel safe, productivity and development suffer,” he stated.

The Data Addicts CEO urged security agencies to move from reactive responses to predictive strategies driven by evidence and intelligence.

He also emphasised the importance of public participation, noting that improved reporting systems and greater trust between citizens and security institutions would enhance efforts to combat crime.

“This moment demands evidence, discipline, and coordination. Data should be treated as a key weapon in the fight against insecurity. If we understand the patterns, we can respond faster and save more lives,” he said.

He added that Nigeria’s future depends on building a security architecture rooted in intelligence, strategy, and timely action.
