Nigeria Leads Africa’s Gaming World

For a long time, South Africa was the “big boss” of gaming in Africa. They had more money and better internet. But in 2026, the game has changed. Nigeria has officially overtaken South Africa to become the country with the most players on the continent.

Here is a simple look at how Nigeria won the race and what the numbers really mean.

Power in Numbers

Nigeria is home to over 220 million people. That is a huge crowd! Because so many young people in Nigeria now have smartphones, the number of gamers has exploded.● Nigeria: Over 46 million active players.

South Africa: Around 26 million players.

While South Africans might spend more money on expensive consoles like the PlayStation 5, Nigeria wins because of its sheer “volume.” Almost every young person you see with a phone is now a gamer.

The Money Story

There are two ways to look at the money in gaming.

Video Games: This is the money spent on games like Call of Duty or Candy Crush. Nigeria makes about $300 million here.

The “Big” Total: If you include online betting (iGaming), which is huge in Nigeria, the total jumps to a staggering $3.86 billion.

Nigeria’s growth is much faster than South Africa’s. Nigeria’s market is growing at about 12% every year, while South Africa is growing at a slower pace of around 4%.
