The federal government has reaffirmed the strategic importance of its engagement with Türkiye following the return of President Bola Tinubu and his delegation from a high-level visit aimed at deepening bilateral ties.

Minister of Interior Dr. Olubummi Tunji-Ojo said the visit focused on expanding cooperation in critical areas, including security, migration management, border control, law enforcement capacity-building, and institutional collaboration, while targeting a $5 billion increase in trade between the two nations.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo explained that the engagements were guided by clear implementation frameworks, mutual accountability, and measurable outcomes aligned with Nigeria’s national security and economic priorities.

The partnership is designed not only to tackle transnational crime, irregular migration, and internal security challenges, but also to unlock opportunities in trade, technology transfer, and skills development.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s head of press and public relations, the minister emphasised that the government remained committed to translating these agreements into tangible results that enhance national security, economic growth and public confidence in institutions. He expressed optimism that the strengthened ties could position Nigeria as a key trade and security partner in the region, combining diplomacy with actionable economic strategies to secure a safer and more prosperous future.
