The Unveiling African Parliament Writers Network (UAPWN) has conferred the prestigious African Trailblazers Excellence Merit Award for Outstanding Leadership in Innovative Microfinance Banking on the managing director/CEO of Nigerian Navy Microfinance Bank, Dr Okeoma Aguocha.
UAPWN, comprising journalists from print, electronic and digital media in six African countries, recognises leaders driving visionary policy, innovation and public service.
At the award presentation, the president of the Unveiling African Parliament Writers Network, Dr Michael Udu, said the 2026 African Legislative Excellence Merit Awards edition spotlights CEOs and administrators advancing people-centred development, in collaboration with ECOWAS parliamentary initiatives.
According to him, under Dr Aguocha’s stewardship, the bank has emerged as a microfinance powerhouse, achieving 150% growth in loan disbursements to over 50,000 underserved clients in three years.
He also disclosed that the MD has introduced innovations, including mobile apps with blockchain security and AI credit scoring, slashed default rates by 40%, expanded rural access, and grown assets to N20 billion.
“Notably, 60% of loans empower women entrepreneurs, aligning with African development goals, he said.
Udu pointed out that Aguocha’s thought leadership in sustainable microfinance policy and contributions influence Nigeria’s financial regulations, exemplifying inclusive impact.
Meanwhile, Dr Aguocha, while responding, said: “This recognition fuels his mission to democratize finance for Nigeria’s underserved.
He argued that, through Fintech and inclusion, the bank has empowered 50,000 lives in rural communities, Naval families, and women entrepreneurs.
