Nigerian Polytechnics Council Appoints New Chairman

The Council of Heads of Polytechnics and Colleges of Technology in Nigeria (COHEADS) has ratified the appointment of the rector of Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic, Zaria, Dr. Mohammed Kabir Abdullahi, as its Chairman.

The ratification was announced on Tuesday at the Council’s 161st regular general meeting.

The ratification of the appointment followed a letter dated 31st March, 2026 signed by the council’s secretary, Mas’ud Elelu.

In a related development, the COHEADS Executive Committee, led by its chairman Dr. Mohammed Kabir Abdullahi, paid a courtesy visit to the executive secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Muhammad Bugaje, at the Board’s liaison office in Abuja.

The delegation hailed Prof. Bugaje on his reappointment for another five-year term.

The NBTE boss commended the Executive Committee of COHEADS for the gesture.

While addressing the COHEADS’ meeting, NBTE boss announced the introduction of a new intervention tagged “One Polytechnic, One Product” (1P-1P), aimed at promoting innovation and national self-reliance through institution-based product development.

The COHEADS meeting chaired by the new chairman, Dr. Mohammed Kabir Abdullahi, also deliberated on key issues affecting polytechnic education in Nigeria, including the report of a retreat held in January 2026, which brought together chairmen of Governing Councils, Commissioners of Education and Principal Officers of polytechnics.

Other matters discussed during the meeting included preparations for the 2026 Nigeria Polytechnic Games (NIPOGA) and the forthcoming World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics conference scheduled to hold in Nairobi, Kenya, from November 23rd to 27th, 2026, with the theme “Building Skills for Sustainability, Innovation and Global Employability.”

Presentations aimed at postering cooperation with COHEADS were also made by Committee of Deans of Engineering in Polytechnics (COMPODET), Ecopath and E-DON.
