Nigeria’s growing reputation in international tennis received another major boost after rising star Seun Ogunsakin qualified for the main draw of the Wimbledon Junior Championships with an impressive straight-sets victory over Canada’s Benjamin Azar.

Ogunsakin sealed his place at the prestigious Grand Slam event with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win, underlining his potential as one of Nigeria’s brightest young tennis prospects.

His qualification is the latest indication of the steady progress Nigerian tennis has made in recent years, reflecting sustained efforts to nurture young players capable of competing on the global stage.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) attributed the achievement to continued investment in sports development under the leadership of its Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.

According to the Commission, its commitment to athlete development and creating opportunities for emerging talents is helping to usher in a new era for Nigerian sport.

Ogunsakin’s success comes on the back of another landmark achievement for Nigerian tennis earlier this year, when the country secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II for the first time in almost three decades following a memorable 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in Lagos.

The tie also marked the return of top-level international tennis to Nigeria, with Lagos hosting a Davis Cup fixture for the first time in 19 years.

Congratulating Ogunsakin and the Nigeria Tennis Federation, the National Sports Commission expressed confidence that the youngster would continue to make the country proud at Wimbledon.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing an enabling environment for athletes, saying it would continue to support programmes aimed at producing more Nigerian champions capable of excelling on the world stage.
