Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, said Nigerians are languishing in poverty and hunger as they continue to bear the brunt of the harsh prevailing economic times in the country.

The governor made the assertion yesterday in Bauchi after a closed-door meeting with Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, who is also the chairman of the PDP Governors‘ Forum,

He said while it is no longer news that the state of the economy plunged millions of Nigerians into untold hardships, persons in position of authorities must make deliberate efforts to salvage the situation for the benefit of all and sundry.

The governor said things appeared not as expected, hence the need to come together and share ideas on how best to address critical national issues.

„Things are very difficult as we know at this point in time as we know. Nigerians are suffering and it is unprecedented. I think we should stop lamenting and ask ourselves what do we do as leaders to reduce the suffering of our people,”  he said.

While commenting on the decision of his deputy, Philip Shuaibu to contest in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election, governor Obaseki said Shuaibu has the constitutional right to contest, saying the choice of who bears PDP’s flag going into the election, is in the hands of the teeming supporters of the party.

“The relationship has been cordial. He wants to run for the seat I currently occupy and as a Nigerian, he has the constitutional right to that nobody can deny him. I am only one out of the millions of supporters of our party and I am not the only one to decide who becomes our party’s flagbearer,” Governor Obaseki said.
