Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress have made a remarkable leap in global basketball, climbing nine places to 26th in the latest FIBA World Ranking for Girls. This surge marks them as one of the world’s most improved youth teams, positioning them as the fourth-biggest mover globally and the highest-ranked nation within the top 30 to achieve such a significant jump.
The rise has also solidified Nigeria’s standing on the African continent, where they now hold third place with 469.5 points, trailing only Mali (16th) and Egypt (21st).
This impressive climb is a direct result of the team’s determined performance at the 2024 FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Czechia. Under the guidance of coach Juliana Akhere, the Junior D’Tigress finished 12th, a placement built on resilient play.
The team’s campaign was highlighted by amorale-boosting classification victory over Argentina, demonstrating their competitive grit. Even in a narrow 85–79 defeat to Korea, the squad showed promise, with captain Wandoo Hembam leading the scoring effort with 19 points.
The tournament also served as a platform for emerging talents like Nora Ezike and Haminatu Ayodeji, underscoring a growing depth of skill within Nigeria’s junior program.
The updated rankings reflect a dynamic shift in international youth basketball, largely driven by recent continental and world competitions. While the United States (787.3 points) remains the undisputed leader after securing a fourth consecutive U-19 World Cup title, other nations have made notable moves:
Spain and Canada held firm in second and third place, respectively, backed by consistent podium finishes.
Australia moved up to fourth after reaching the U-19 final.
European nations like Slovenia, Italy, Serbia, and Poland also made significant gains within the top 15.
Nigeria’s ascent to 26th place is a clear signal of the team’s renewed competitiveness at the junior level.
The FIBA ranking system rewards sustained performance over a defined cycle, indicating that the Junior D’Tigress are building a foundation for future success on the world stage.
