Nigerian sports administrator and former basketball star, Olumide Oyedeji, has secured a significant appointment to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission. This move considerably strengthens Nigeria’s standing in global sports governance.
Mr. Oyedeji, who currently holds the position of Secretary of the World Olympians Association (WOA) and chairs the Nigeria Athletes’ Commission, will represent the WOA on the 23-member IOC Athletes’ Commission. His appointment is a testament to his strong leadership and unwavering commitment to advocating for athletes’ rights and welfare, both in Nigeria and internationally.
The commission boasts a diverse international membership, including Gabby Ahrens representing Africa, alongside Isabel Swan (Pan America), Ronald Rauhe (Europe), Kenneth Wallace (Oceania), and Ning Ding (Asia).
Further bolstering Nigeria’s presence, veteran table tennis player Olufunke Oshonaike has also been elected to the commission, underscoring the nation’s increasing influence within the Olympic Movement.
The commission is led by Spanish basketball legend Pau Gasol, with Maja Włoszczowska, Humphrey Kayange, and Oluseyi Smith (Canada) serving as vice-chairs.
The IOC Athletes’ Commission acts as the primary voice for athletes within the Olympic Movement. Its mandate includes championing their interests, fostering their development both during and after their sporting careers, and fortifying the worldwide network of athlete representatives.
Comprising 23 members who serve eight-year terms, the majority of the commission’s members are elected by their fellow Olympians during the Olympic Games. Typically, four members are elected during each Summer Games and two during each Winter Games. The commission’s chairperson also holds a seat on the IOC Executive Board.
Mr. Oyedeji, a former professional basketball centre who played three seasons in the National Basketball Association, remains a prominent figure in sports administration. He also serves as President of the Nigeria Olympians Association and Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee.
His election is widely regarded as a pivotal step forward for Nigerian athletes, offering them greater representation and a stronger voice in global sports decision-making.
