The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced a significant setback in their quest for automatic qualification for the World Cup after they were held to a 1-1 draw by group leaders South Africa in Bloemfontein, yesterday.

This result leaves Nigeria with five draws from their eight matches, alongside two wins and one loss, placing them in jeopardy of missing out on a play-off spot and potentially missing their second consecutive World Cup. The last time Nigeria participated in the tournament was in Russia in 2018, having missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar.

For South Africa, the outcome positions them favourably as they seek to reach their first World Cup finals since hosting the tournament in 2010.
The highly anticipated Group C encounter saw both teams deliver a gritty performance, but ultimately, Nigeria’s inability to secure the needed three points jeopardises their chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

South Africa drew first blood with an unfortunate own goal from the Nigerian captain Williams Troost Ekong which placed immediate pressure on the Super Eagles. However, the Nigerian team displayed resilience, regrouping under pressure and demonstrating composure against a dynamic South African side.

Nigeria’s equaliser came just before half-time in the 45th minute, when Calvin Bassey capitalised on a loose ball in the box, heading it home to bring the score level. The goal revitalised the Nigerian squad, and both teams engaged in a fierce battle for the winner in the closing moments of the match.
Head Coach Eric Sekou Chelle commended his team’s resilience post-match, asserting that the draw maintains Nigeria’s qualification hopes. Despite missing star striker Victor Osimhen due to a foot injury, the Super Eagles adapted their attacking strategy and relied heavily on tactical discipline to thwart their opponents.

As it stands, South Africa leads Group C with 17 points from eight matches, while Nigeria occupies second place with 11 points, level with third-placed Benin Republic and fourth-placed Rwanda.
