NiMet Secures ISO 9001:2015 Certification For Yola, Osubi, Owerri Airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at the Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports.

The latest certification followed a directive by the minister of aviation and aerospace development, Festus Keyamo, to the director-general and chief executive officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain the upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The certification was achieved after a successful third-party audit of NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services provided to the aviation industry at the three airports.

The audit, conducted by Certech Inc. Canada, lasted from July 20 to 23, 2026, and established that NiMet’s services at the airports conformed to the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard.

The development further strengthens Nigeria’s compliance with international standards in the provision of weather and meteorological information critical to safe and efficient flight operations.

NiMet had also been successfully recertified to the ISO 9001:2015 standard at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

With the latest certification, NiMet now has ISO 9001:2015 certification covering eight Nigerian international airports, including Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport, Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri, and the other previously certified locations.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits to be conducted until the next recertification exercise due in 2029.

In a letter dated July 26, 2026, addressed to the NiMet director-general, Prof. Charles Anosike, and signed by Frank Strohmeier, lead auditor and director at Certech, the certification body said the objectives of the surveillance audit were achieved.

According to the letter, a systematic process audit was conducted with emphasis on risks and objectives in line with the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The third-party audit consequently resulted in the issuance of a revised certificate stating that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s quality management system conforms to the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

Speaking on the achievement, Anosike expressed delight over the certification, commending the agency’s Quality Management System team led by Rotimi Adenubi for its efforts.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” Anosike said.

He, however, stressed that the agency would not rest on the achievement, noting that the management remained committed to improving standards across all its operational locations.

“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” he added.

The certification of the three airports is particularly significant as it represents the first time NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports have undergone the ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.
