The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has assured Nigerians that no case of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) has been recorded in the country.

NCDC, however, said in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and partners, a risk assessment has classified the threat of hMPV in Nigeria as moderate.

The announcement followed reports of increased respiratory infections in parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including China. The rise, attributed to seasonal trends, involves common respiratory pathogens like hMPV, influenza, and RSV.

In a public advisory signed by NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, the agency stated that it was closely monitoring the global situation and has implemented measures to safeguard public health. It urged citizens to remain calm, avoid panic, and adhere to preventive health measures.

How to Protect Yourself During Respiratory Infection Season:

Practice Good Hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water or use alcohol-based sanitisers.

Follow Respiratory Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when sneezing or coughing. Dispose of tissues properly.

Stay Home When Unwell: Isolate yourself if experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Strengthen Immunity: Eat a nutritious diet, stay hydrated, and get enough rest.

Seek Medical Attention: Visit a healthcare provider for prolonged or severe symptoms.
Get Vaccinated: Ensure vaccinations against respiratory illnesses, like influenza, are up-to-date.

The NCDC added that remained vigilant and committed to public safety, providing regular updates and ensuring Nigeria’s preparedness against any potential health threats.

It encouraged citizens to stay informed through official channels and follow public health advisories.
