Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Odega has criticised the current state of the Nigerian film industry, saying the quality of productions has declined significantly.
Speaking during a recent podcast interview, Odega said Nollywood’s earlier years were marked by stronger storytelling and greater attention to craftsmanship.
According to him, the industry now prioritises quantity over quality, with some filmmakers producing multiple movies from a single script.
“Back then, one script would give us one unforgettable movie. But now, one script can give you seven bad movies, and that’s not right. Nollywood back then was far better than the Nollywood of today,” he said.
The actor, who has spent more than three decades in the industry, also reflected on his early involvement in Nollywood, describing himself as one of its pioneers.
“I was among the people who made Nollywood. When we started, Nollywood was just a phenomenon. Our organisation was formerly called the Nigerian Actors Guild (NAG) before changing to the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
“It was after then that Nollywood came. So, I am one of the pioneers of Nollywood. I have been in the movie industry for 30 years,” he added.
