The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the North East has thrown its weight behind the acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, saying his leadership has helped the party  navigate through internal crisis.

This comes as after the National Working Committee split following a battle of suspensions among national officers of the party.

However, PDP governors have called for truce just as it backed Damagum to continue in acting capacity pending the elections of national officers of the party.

North East Zonal Working Committee and chairman of the PDP in a communique issued at the end of their meeting in Bauchi yesterday and read by Adamawa State PDP chairman, Tahir Shehu, announced the decision, stressing that the vote was necessary to stabilise the party.

Shehu emphasised the importance of the Northeast’s alignment with the party’s national structure to develop the PDP into a formidable opposition ahead of 2027.

He said the regional leadership believes that this unified front will elevate the party to “lofty heights” and create a sustainable future for Nigerians, especially in light of the failures of the current APC government to take proactive measures.

“The PDP is the only hope for Nigeria, and we stand united behind Damagum’s leadership to move this party forward,” he said.

Shehu commended Bauchi, Adamawa and Taraba State PDP governors for their continued provision of infrastructural development to their citizens, demonstrating the party’s ability to govern effectively, each making significant strides in their respective states despite the national economic downturn.

The Northeast’s support for Damagum is seen as a significant step in restoring the party’s integrity and uniting its various factions, further positioning the PDP as a party ready to reclaim national leadership in the next election cycle.
