The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has called on the federal government to immortalise the late Prof. Jibril Muhammad Aminu in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to national development.
In a condolence message issued signed by the national publicity secretary, Dr. Ladan Salihu in Bauchi yesterday, the LND expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the elder statesman.
Describing Professor Aminu as a towering figure in Nigerian public life, the league praised his distinguished service as a medical doctor, academic, administrator, diplomat, politician and respected elder statesman.
“His passing marks the end of an era and a colossal loss not only to northern Nigeria and our nation, but to the African continent as a whole,” the statement said.
The LND highlighted Professor Aminu’s lifetime of service from his early career as a medical scholar to his leadership as the pioneer executive secretary of the National Universities Commission, vice chancellor of the University of Maiduguri and minister of education.
“As minister of petroleum resources and later Ambassador to the United States, he represented the country with grace, intellect, and dignity. As senator for Adamawa Central, he brought wisdom, civility and integrity to the Nigerian senate, greatly enriching democratic discourse,” Ladan Salihu added.
The league also described Professor Aminu as a visionary who believed in the transformative power of education, the value of dialogue in conflict resolution and the responsibility of leadership in nation-building.
“To us in the League of Northern Democrats, he was more than an icon; he was a mentor, a moral compass and a symbol of the high ideals we aspire to. His unwavering support for intellectual rigour, cultural pride, and political enlightenment shaped the reformist agenda we pursue today,” the League noted.
It extended condolences to his family, the people of Adamawa State, the northern region and the entire nation.
