Rivers United Technical Manager, Finidi George, has expressed his satisfaction after the club secured qualification for the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League, despite one game remaining in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
The Port Harcourt side achieved the milestone following a thrilling 3-2 away victory over Wikki Tourists in a matchday 37 encounter at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium in Bauchi.
The result keeps Rivers United firmly in the title race, as they sit second on the table, just one point behind leaders Rangers, who also secured a 2-1 win over Bendel Insurance.
Wikki Tourists took the lead in the 21st minute through Jonathan Mairiga, before Rivers United responded with an equaliser from Handsome Surveyor in the 34th minute. The hosts regained the lead early in the second half, with Imamu Bala scoring in the 47th minute. Rivers United, however, showed resilience. Chijioke Mbaoma restored parity in the 59th minute, before Taofeek Otaniyi struck the decisive goal five minutes from time.
Reflecting on the performance, Finidi praised his players’ determination and fighting spirit.
“It was a difficult match. Coming back twice to win 3-2 is no mean feat,” he said after the game. “The boys gave everything in the closing stages to get that winning goal. Playing away in Bauchi, with strong home support, makes it even more commendable.”
He added that while the team remains focused on winning their final game against Katsina United, they are aware that the title race could still be decided elsewhere. “We will concentrate on winning our last home match and leave the rest to take care of itself,” Finidi noted.
The former Super Eagles winger also described back-to-back CAF Champions League qualification as a significant achievement.
“Securing Champions League football for two consecutive seasons is outstanding. Many teams strive for this, and it’s a testament to the players’ mentality and hard work,” he said.
