Wikki Tourists’ fight for survival in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) took another hit on Saturday as they played out a dramatic 2-2 draw against former champions Enyimba at home.
The result leaves the Bauchi-based side languishing in 17th position, firmly entrenched in the relegation net with only a few games remaining.
The “Giant Elephants” of Enyimba, on the other hand, temporarily climbed five places to 12th on the league table, offering some relief after a mixed season.
Wikki Tourists started brightly, taking the lead in the 15th minute to send the home crowd into raptures. They held onto their slender advantage until halftime, going into the break 1-0 up.
However, Enyimba, known for their resilience, equalized in the 56th minute, setting up a tense second half. The home side, desperate for points, regained the lead in the 71st minute through J. Mairiga, igniting hopes of a crucial victory.
But it was not to be for Wikki Tourists. In the dying moments of the game, seven minutes into added time, A. Nwaorisa snatched a dramatic equalizer for Enyimba, breaking the hearts of the Wikki faithful. The final whistle confirmed a 2-2 draw, a result that feels more like a loss for the struggling home side.
With their NPFL status hanging by a thread, Wikki Tourists will need to dig deep in their remaining fixtures to avoid the drop.
