In a high-stakes Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, Ikorodu City delivered a statement performance on Tuesday evening, cruising to a 3-1 victory over relegation-threatened Wikki Tourists.
The win not only solidified the Oga Boys’ push for a debut continental slot but also showcased their attacking firepower and resilience.
From the opening whistle, Ikorodu City seized control with relentless intensity. Just four minutes into the match, the deadlock was broken when Alfred Odinaka rose high to meet a cross, directing a deft header toward the back post.
There, the unmarked Salami Farouk displayed composure beyond his years, calmly slotting the ball past the sprawling Wikki goalkeeper to ignite the home crowd.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 18th minute through Abayomi Ayodeji, whose clinical finish marked a historic milestone: Ikorodu City’s 100th goal in NPFL history.
The strike served as a testament to the team’s growing pedigree in the top flight, leaving Wikki’s defense scrambling for answers.
As the first half wore on, Ikorodu continued to pile on the pressure. Eight minutes before the break, Joseph Arumala won a penalty after being brought down inside the box following a mazy run.
Arumala, known for his ice-cool nerve, stepped up and drilled the spot-kick into the bottom corner, extending the lead to 3-0.
That goal also propelled Arumala to the summit of the NPFL scoring charts, his 13th of the season underlining his status as one of the league’s most lethal forwards.
Wikki Tourists, languishing near the foot of the table, showed faint signs of resistance after the interval. In the 65th minute, Jonathan Mairiga pulled one back for the visitors with a well-placed finish, briefly threatening a comeback.
However, Ikorodu City’s defense, marshaled by a disciplined backline, held firm in the final half-hour, snuffing out any further danger and preserving a comfortable margin.
With this emphatic result, Ikorodu City leapfrogged rivals to occupy third place in the NPFL standings, amassing 58 points and keeping their continental ambitions firmly on track.
Meanwhile, Wikki Tourists remain rooted in 19th position, facing an increasingly steep uphill battle to escape the relegation zone as the season enters its decisive phase.
The Oga Boys will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming fixtures, while Wikki must regroup quickly if they are to defy the odds and retain their top-flight status.
