Kano Pillars, a club with a storied history in Nigerian football, found themselves in an increasingly precarious position in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) yesterday, suffering a damaging 2-0 defeat to Rangers International FC at the iconic Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. This latest setback sees the former league champions plunge further into the relegation zone, now occupying the 18th spot and third from the bottom of the table, with a meagre 25 points accumulated from 24 matches. The pressure is undoubtedly mounting on the Kano-based side as they face a formidable battle to retain their top-flight status.
Rangers International FC, playing with renewed vigour on their home turf, opened the scoring after just 11 minutes when Emmanuel Essien expertly found the back of the net, giving the home side a crucial early advantage. The decisive blow, however, came in unfortunate circumstances for Kano Pillars, as Mukhtar Mohammed inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net, sealing a comfortable victory for Rangers and deepening the woes of the visiting team. The result not only provided a significant boost for Rangers but also served as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Kano Pillars in what is proving to be a highly competitive season.
Elsewhere in the league, the title race took another intriguing twist as Nasarawa United battled hard to secure a 1-1 draw against Wikki Tourists in Bauchi. This hard-fought point proved vital for Nasarawa United, allowing them to close the gap on league leaders Rivers United to a mere single point, setting the stage for a thrilling climax to the season. The intensity at the top of the table suggests that every point will be fiercely contested in the remaining fixtures.
In Aba, Enyimba, another heavyweight of Nigerian football, secured a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Bayelsa United. The decisive goal came nine minutes from time, with Samuel Agu emerging as the hero for Enyimba, ensuring they kept pace with the frontrunners and maintained their challenge for the league title.
Further down the table, Katsina United delivered a strong performance at the Sani Abacha Stadium, defeating Abia Warriors 2-0. Uche Collins was the star of the show, bagging an impressive brace that propelled his team to a vital three points. Meanwhile, Niger Tornadoes staged a remarkable comeback in Minna, rallying from a two-goal deficit to hold Bendel Insurance to a thrilling 2-2 draw. Bendel Insurance had initially taken a commanding lead in the first half with goals from Nnamdi Anthony and Chinedu Nwosu.
However, Tornadoes showcased incredible resilience after the break, with Abdulaziz Dalhatu and Rickson Mendos scoring to salvage a point in a captivating encounter that highlighted the unpredictable nature of the NPFL.
