The National Sports Commission (NSC) is contemplating the inclusion of foreign-based athletes in future editions of the National Sports Festival (NSF).

Chairman of the commission Shehu Dikko made this announcement yesterday in Abeokuta while speaking to reporters at the ongoing 22nd biennial sports festival. He emphasised that the festival’s purpose extends beyond merely securing victories; it aims to provide an essential platform for showcasing the nation’s talents.

“Looking ahead, we are considering inviting our top athletes—including those based overseas—for the next festival,” Dikko stated. “Ultimately, it’s not solely about winning; it’s about creating the right environment to highlight our national abilities.”

He further revealed that the NSC will analyse the performance data from this festival against African and world records, which will aid in establishing benchmarks for future competitions.

“For instance, at the University Games trials conducted at the University of Lagos, the final report featured three columns: the winner’s results, the African record, and the world record. This perspective allows us to monitor athletes’ progress and set realistic objectives for ongoing support,” he explained.

Dikko reiterated that the origins of the athletes are irrelevant in the context of the NSF, stressing that the focus should be on their participation and potential. He affirmed that with adequate training, support, and publicity, athletes can truly excel.

“Sports transcend economic value and constitute one of our greatest national assets. It unites us. Regardless of your background, if you’re involved, you become part of the family,” he asserted.

He noted that while some states may boast a plethora of athletes, they often face challenges in registering participants across all sports. This creates a landscape for healthy competition, encouraging other states to elevate their standards and participation rates.

“That’s the beauty of the system,” Dikko concluded. (NAN)
