The National Sports Commission (NSC) has set the stage for Team Nigeria’s preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with a strong call for enhanced standards from the nation’s sports federations.

At a strategic meeting held in Abuja, Hon. Bukola Olopade, the NSC Director General, emphasised the importance of athlete welfare, discipline, and performance as central tenets guiding decisions leading up to the Games. The engagement aimed to unify federations under the Commission’s performance-driven roadmap.

In a significant development, Olopade announced that Team Nigeria will conduct its overseas training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland. The location, he said, was selected for its exceptional facilities, climate similarities to Glasgow, and proximity to the Games Village. According to him, local camping will commence on June 9, 2026, across the country to facilitate early conditioning, medical screenings, and technical preparation.

“The welfare of our athletes is non-negotiable. They are the reason we are going to Glasgow, and everything we do must reflect that,” Olopade stated. He expressed optimism that this would be Nigeria’s most successful Commonwealth Games to date, pointing out that preparations are already underway to address gaps identified from past performances.

Scheduled to run from July 22 to August 2, 2026, the Commonwealth Games will host over 70 nations and territories competing across more than 20 sports. Historically, Nigeria has been one of Africa’s strongest participants, and the NSC is determined to enhance this legacy through meticulous planning, data-driven athlete support, and accountability at the federation level.

Olopade assured that the Commission will provide necessary logistics and medical support to ensure Team Nigeria has a competitive edge. “The days of excuses are over. Glasgow 2026 is about results. It’s about demonstrating that Nigerian sports is back on the right trajectory—focused, purposeful, and athlete-centred,” he asserted.

With early camping schedules, upgraded logistics, and a clear mandate for improvement, Team Nigeria is not just preparing to participate in Glasgow, but also to contend for medals across various disciplines.

As the countdown to Glasgow 2026 begins, the National Sports Commission is laying the groundwork for a new era in Nigerian sports—one characterised by early preparation, professional management, and unwavering confidence in its athletes.
