As part of efforts in curbing vandalism within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the FCT Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)  has paraded 19 scavengers and miscreants who specialise in vandalism and theft of rail tracks, telecom installations and other critical national assets of government.

FCT commandant of the corps, Olusola Odumosu, who paraded the suspects yesterday, vowed not to relent in his resolve to tackle the challenges of manhole theft and  rail track vandalism but ensure the protection of facilities in the power, telecoms and transportation sectors, with emphasis on rail infrastructure, among others.

According to Commandant Odumosu, the arrest was made possible following intelligence that the paraded suspects disguised as homeless persons to sleep under major bridges in the FCT, but turnaround to vandalise and steal  manholes, rail tracks and other installations of government.

The FCT commandant further explained that the Civil Defence is committed  to eradicating the activities of vandals.

Odumosu, further promised  to go after scavengers with bad intentions   and urged them to leave the nation’s capital , as they can no longer be tolerated , threatening that the law will catch up with them.

He said, ‘‘The FCT Command has spared no effort in achieving this crucial objective. To counteract the escalating instances of theft and vandalism that have been adversely impacting the FCT metropolis, our command took result oriented approach. We activated strategically planned routine night patrols, which has today  proven to be highly effective. It was in the course of these patrols that we successfully arrested nineteen (19) scavengers and miscreants within the stipulated time frame.”

Odumosu who added that the arrested suspects have   undergone comprehensive interview and profiling processes, saying that they will be handed over to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) for possible further prosecution.

He said, “These intensified measures serve a dual purpose: deterring potential criminals and ensuring the apprehension of those responsible for these unlawful activities.

“ Through these actions, we are sending an unequivocal and resolute message that criminal behavior will no longer be tolerated within our jurisdiction.

The proactive strategy we have embraced underscores the unswerving commitment of the government to address the concerns of its citizens. We are steadfastly dedicated to safeguarding the integrity of critical national assets and infrastructure throughout the FCT Metropolis.
