Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has expressed sadness over the death of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

NSCIA described his death as a major loss to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by the secretary-general of NSCIA, Prof. Is-haq O. Oloyede, the Council, under the leadership of its president-seneral and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, paid glowing tribute to the late monarch for his impactful legacy, especially in the promotion of Islam and unity.

“Oba Adetona’s invaluable contributions to the growth of the Muslim community in Ogun State in particular, and Nigeria in general, are unqualifiable.

“His death is not only a loss to the government and people of Ogun State, but also a profound loss to the entire Muslim Ummah,” the statement said.

Until his passing, Oba Adetona served as the Chairman of the Ogun State Muslim Council, playing a central role in strengthening the Islamic faith and fostering peaceful coexistence among diverse communities.

According to the NSCIA, the Awujale’s reign was defined by wisdom, religious commitment, and service to humanity. “His long reign was not just a chapter in the history of Ijebu, it was a volume of impressive royalty, religious devotion, commitment to peace building and devotion to noble causes,” the statement added.

The Council noted that the Awujale was more than a traditional ruler — he was a national figure whose voice and counsel were respected across the country, including within religious and interfaith circles.

“Oba Adetona was a great leader who believed the mettle of leadership lies in serving people,” the Council stated. “His legacy transcends Ijebuland and Ogun State. He will be sorely missed.”

NSCIA extended its condolences to the family of the late monarch, the Ijebu people worldwide, the government and people of Ogun State, the Ogun State Muslim Community, the Ogun State Muslim Council, and the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN).

“We pray that Almighty Allah overlook his shortcomings, expand his grave and admit him to Aljannah Firdaos.”
