The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has said it expects a review of the 2027 election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
In the press statement, signed by the Secretary-General, NSCIA, Prof Is-haq Oloyede, and made available to Media Houses yesterday, the religious organisation described the release of the election timetable as audacious.
“Furthermore, the Council criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for scheduling the presidential election during Ramadan and the gubernatorial election on a probable Eidul Fitr day, calling it an “audacious announcement” and stating they are “watching very closely and expecting an immediate review,” the statement said.
Despite these challenges, the NSCIA urged Muslims to “remain resolute in their belief in Allah” and to observe Ramadan with “sincerity of purpose, calmness, commitment to virtues and power of prayers.” The Council concluded with prayers for the protection of Nigeria and its people.
NSCIA also criticised what it describes as a fabricated narrative of ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria, asserting it is a deliberate manipulation designed to attract the attention of global powers.
The group condemned the actions of “secessionist elements and bigoted religious leaders” whom they accuse of attempting to incite conflict and orchestrate the annihilation of Muslims within Nigeria.
The NSCIA highlighted a “trying period for Islam and Muslims in Nigeria,” mirroring global trends of heightened Islamophobia. They contend that narratives inconsistent with the reality of insecurity are being spun to “criminalise Muslims.”
The Council further asserted that Muslims are becoming “double victims,” suffering from attacks by groups like Boko Haram and banditry, including the “underreported gruesome murder of about 200 Muslims in Kwara state,” while simultaneously being subjected to negative media portrayals that ignore their suffering.
The statement also raised concerns about perceived media bias and inequality against Muslims, citing instances where Christian-related incidents received different treatment.
