President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Grand Master Tayo Popoola, has commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its recent cash support to young athletes excelling in their respective sports through the Youth Appreciation Tour programme.
In a statement released via NTF Media, Popoola, the first Nigerian black belt holder, expressed gratitude to the NSC leadership, particularly Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their transformative initiatives in the sports sector.
“This recognition of young athletes marks a significant step in the right direction,” he remarked. “It’s been a long time since we’ve seen such gestures rewarding excellence. Presenting awards within school premises not only honors these athletes but also inspires others to pursue their athletic dreams.”
Popoola encouraged the award recipients to remain focused and use their achievements as motivation for future success. “To all our athletes recognized today, congratulations! Remember, this is just the beginning. Let this reward drive you to strive for the top.”
Three outstanding Taekwondo athletes were honored during the event: Umeh Kanyisola Unique received N2,000,000 for winning gold in Kyorugi at the 2024 National Youth Games and a bronze medal at the 1st African School Games in Algeria.
Andrew Yemi Miracle, who earned silver at the 2025 African Junior and Cadet Taekwondo Championships, was awarded ₦1,000,000.
Umeh Crown, a bronze medalist at both the African Junior and Cadet Taekwondo Championships and the 2025 National Youth Games, also received ₦1,000,000 for her exceptional performance.
This initiative not only celebrates individual achievements but also aims to foster a culture of excellence among young athletes in Nigeria.
