The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called on journalists across the country to take an active role in defending Nigeria’s democracy against the growing threat of disinformation ahead of future elections.
Ike made the call on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the NUJ FCT Council’s annual Press Week and Awards held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
Speaking on the theme, “Defending Democracy in an Era of Disinformation,” the NUJ chairman described the topic as timely and significant, warning that false information, propaganda and manipulated narratives pose serious threats to national peace, unity and democratic governance.
She said journalists must remain committed to truth, ethical reporting and professionalism, especially at a time when misinformation spreads rapidly through digital platforms and social media.
According to her, media practitioners are not merely observers of national events but custodians of truth and defenders of public interest.
“In an era where misinformation spreads rapidly through digital platforms, our responsibility as journalists has become even greater. We must continue to verify facts, present balanced reports and uphold the ethics that give credibility to our profession,” she said.
Ike stressed that the media remains central to sustaining democracy, adding that journalists must resist every attempt to undermine public trust through fake news and distorted narratives.
The NUJ chairman also commended award recipients honoured during the ceremony, describing them as outstanding professionals who have distinguished themselves through ethical journalism and dedication to public service.
“These awardees have made the NUJ FCT Council proud. Through their dedication to truth and professionalism, they are helping to change the narrative and strengthen confidence in the media,” she stated.
She further appreciated the support of corporate organisations, particularly Transcorp Hilton Hotel, for partnering with the council in hosting the event.
The week-long programme is expected to feature lectures, discussions and engagements focused on democracy, governance, media responsibility and national development.
A keynote lecture on democracy, governance and the role of the media is expected to be delivered by former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Ndudi Elumelu.
Ike urged journalists to remain courageous and committed to speaking truth to power, insisting that the future of Nigeria’s democracy depends largely on the integrity, discipline and professionalism of the media.
“The future of our democracy depends in no small measure on the courage, discipline and integrity of the media,” she added.
