The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council has commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on securing regulatory autonomy for Gombe State’s electricity market.

This followed the formal transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC), marking a transformative milestone in the state’s journey toward energy independence and economic empowerment.

The NUJ, in a statement by its chairman Faruk Mu’azu, yesterday, commended the Governor’s commitment to harnessing the opportunities presented by the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023.

According to Mu’azu, by fulfilling statutory requirements and engaging with federal authorities, Gombe State has now joined the league of forward-thinking subnational governments taking charge of their intrastate electricity markets.

“This bold step not only decentralizes power sector governance but also positions Gombe to design locally responsive electricity tariffs, attract private sector investment, and accelerate access to reliable power for homes, businesses, and industries across the state.

“The establishment of GOSERC and the forthcoming incorporation of JED SubCo signal a new era of tailored regulation, improved service delivery, and inclusive economic growth,” the statement partly read.

He added that the state council pledges its support to the state government in the transition, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in ensuring the success of this reform.

Mu’azu also called on GOSERC to uphold the standards of transparency, professionalism, and regulatory independence as it assumes its critical mandate.

The council chairman stressed that the council is committed to informing the public and amplifying the voices of citizens as the state embarks on the new chapter in its energy future.
