Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has honoured the Abuja bureau chief and head of Northern Operations at News Central, Amadin Uyi, with a Lifetime Service Award in recognition of his contributions to journalism and mentorship of young reporters.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the director of Commercial and Communications at News Central, Rosemary Egabor-Afolahan. The award was presented during the NUJ FCT award and lecture ceremony held recently, under the theme, “2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Disinformation.”
The event brought together media professionals, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to discuss the role of journalism in protecting democratic processes amid the rise of misinformation.
Speaking on the recognition, the Head of Reportorial at News Central, Bernard Akede, described the award as a reflection of Uyi’s commitment to ethical journalism and capacity building within the profession.
“As a newsroom, we celebrate Amadin’s well-deserved recognition. His commitment to ethical reporting and to training the next generation of journalists has strengthened journalistic standards and contributed to the public’s right to accurate information,” Akede said.
Uyi, who has led News Central’s Abuja bureau and overseen operations across Northern Nigeria for several years, was commended for championing newsroom mentorship, capacity-building initiatives and editorial standards.
According to colleagues and mentees, his mentorship has strengthened reporters’ skills in investigative reporting, verification, and responsible coverage of sensitive political issues. The NUJ Lifetime Service Award recognises media professionals whose careers have made lasting contributions to journalism and the development of the profession.
