Obi Cubana Reaffirms Commitment to Ndi-Igbo Unity Amid Enugu Comment Controversy

Prominent Nigerian businessman and chairman of Cubana Group, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana, has clarified his recent remarks in Enugu State, insisting they were misrepresented and taken out of context.

The entrepreneur, who came under criticism following the circulation of a short video clip from his speech, said his comments were neither intended to disparage the Igbo people nor undermine their collective identity.

According to him, the original address, which lasted over three minutes, was reduced to a 10-second excerpt and widely shared with what he described as “gross misrepresentation.”

He explained that his message centred on encouraging greater civic participation, patience, and informed engagement in governance processes.

“In any functional democracy, the right to support individuals is fundamental. Citizens must be free to support candidates of their choice without fear or intimidation,” he said.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Igbo, Obi Cubana maintained that his intervention was driven by genuine concern for the advancement of the South-East.

“My speech was perhaps deliberately misunderstood. I did not intend to insult Ndigbo. I spoke out of concern and a desire for progress, and I remain fully committed to the unity and development of our people,” he stated.

He further clarified that the controversial portion of his speech was aimed at highlighting the need for increased participation of the South-East in governance, noting that such involvement was critical to ensuring equitable distribution of projects and development opportunities.

Obi Cubana also dismissed claims suggesting he described Ndigbo as lacking knowledge, stressing that such interpretations were inaccurate and misleading.

The businessman reaffirmed his ties to the region, emphasising his longstanding contributions to the socio-economic development of Igboland.

“As a proud son of the soil, everything I have said and done has always been in the interest of progress, peace, and prosperity for Ndigbo,” he said.

He urged Ndi Igbo, both at home and in the diaspora, to remain united and avoid divisive narratives fueled by misinterpretation, calling instead for collaboration and a shared vision for regional development.

He further reiterated his confidence in the resilience, enterprise, and global relevance of the Igbo people, stressing the need for sustained dialogue, mutual respect, and collective responsibility in achieving long-term progress.
