President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt Hon. Victor Ochei, has congratulated Nigerian tennis prospects Seun Ogunsakin and Esther Adesina for their impressive performances at the 2026 Wimbledon Junior Championships, describing their achievements as a testament to resilience, ambition and determination.

In a statement issued by the NTF Media Department, Ochei praised the duo for flying the flag for Nigeria and inspiring a new generation of African tennis players with their exploits on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Although Ogunsakin and his Botswana partner, Ntungamili Raguin, were denied a place in the boys’ doubles final after losing 6-3, 6-7 (6), 10-6 to top seeds Luis Guto Miguel of Brazil and Žiga Šeško of Slovenia in the semi-finals, the NTF president said their remarkable run had already secured a place in history.

The all-African pairing became the first from the continent to reach the Wimbledon Junior Boys’ Doubles semi-finals, having earlier stunned the sixth seeds with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory in the quarter-finals.

Ochei also commended Ogunsakin’s impressive singles campaign, in which he emerged as the only African to progress through the qualifying rounds into the Wimbledon Junior main draw after defeating Canada’s Benjamin Azar in straight sets.

Although his challenge ended in the first round against Britain’s Oliver Page, Ogunsakin’s achievement was another milestone for Nigerian tennis, as he became the first Nigerian to record a victory in a Grand Slam main draw since the 1990 Australian Open.

The NTF president also applauded Esther Adesina, who, despite representing Great Britain, is of Nigerian parentage. He described her maiden appearance in the Wimbledon qualifying draw as another source of pride for Nigeria and evidence of the abundance of tennis talent of Nigerian heritage across the world.

“Seun Ogunsakin and Esther Adesina have shown the world what can be achieved through purpose, ambition and unwavering determination. Their performances at Wimbledon have brought immense pride to Nigeria and the African continent,” Ochei said.

“While every athlete dreams of lifting trophies, history is often made by those who dare to compete fearlessly on the biggest stages.”

Addressing Ogunsakin directly, Ochei encouraged the teenager to remain focused on his development.

“Your journey has only just begun. Reaching the semi-finals of a Grand Slam doubles event and breaking long-standing barriers for Nigerian tennis are achievements worthy of celebration. Keep believing, keep working and remain focused. The future is incredibly bright.”

He also praised Adesina for her continued progress.

“Your remarkable progress at Wimbledon is equally inspiring. Your success reflects the global excellence of athletes of Nigerian heritage, and we celebrate your achievements with great pride.”

Ochei reaffirmed the Nigeria Tennis Federation’s commitment to creating more opportunities for young players to compete on the international circuit, saying the performances of Ogunsakin and Adesina validate the federation’s renewed efforts to develop world-class talent.

He urged the pair and other emerging Nigerian players to remain disciplined, ambitious and committed, expressing confidence that even greater achievements, including Grand Slam titles and successful professional careers, are within their reach.

“Nigeria is proud of you. Your courage, ambition and determination have inspired millions of young athletes to dream bigger. Continue to fly the Nigerian spirit high wherever your careers take you,” Ochei added.
