Kogi State governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to the protection and strengthening of democratic institutions, describing democracy as the most reliable system for ensuring peace, development, accountability, and the protection of fundamental rights.

In his Democracy Day message on Friday, Ododo congratulated Nigerians on the milestone of sustained democratic governance, urging citizens to reflect on the sacrifices made by national heroes who fought to entrench democratic rule in the country.

Quoting former United States President Abraham Lincoln, the governor described democracy as “the government of the people, by the people, for the people,” stressing that its strength depends not only on elections but also on the active participation of citizens in governance.

He said, “As we celebrate today, I urge all Nigerians to remain committed to the preservation and protection of our democracy. The gains we enjoy today were secured through years of struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment by patriots who believed in a better Nigeria.”

Ododo cautioned against actions that could weaken democratic institutions, calling instead for tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship among Nigerians.

He noted that despite prevailing national challenges, democracy continues to provide a framework for governance, development, peace, and the protection of freedoms.

Drawing from former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the governor said good governance remains central to tackling poverty and driving development, adding that democracy provides the foundation on which such governance is built.

Ododo also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing him as one of Nigeria’s strong advocates of democracy whose political journey reflects commitment to democratic ideals and national service.

He said Tinubu “stood shoulder to shoulder with other patriots during some of the nation’s most difficult periods,” adding that democracy had provided him the opportunity to serve the country at the highest level.

The governor further urged Nigerians to support and pray for leaders at all levels, stressing that nation-building requires collective responsibility, patriotism, and positive civic engagement.

He paid tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, describing him as a central figure in Nigeria’s democratic history and the symbol of the June 12 struggle.

According to him, Abiola “chose the people over personal wealth and influence,” a sacrifice he said laid the foundation for Nigeria’s modern democratic experience.

“He will continue to be remembered as the foundation of our greatness as a nation,” Ododo said.

The governor, on behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, wished Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration and expressed optimism that democracy would continue to deliver hope, justice, opportunities, and prosperity.
