Organisers of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have announced a one-week postponement of the 2026 edition, with the event now set to take place on May 30 instead of the earlier scheduled May 23.

Pamodzi Sports Marketing, the race organisers, confirmed that the decision was taken to allow for the completion of enhanced logistical arrangements aimed at delivering a safer and more seamless experience for participants and spectators.

According to the organisers, the additional time will be used to strengthen key operational areas, including expanded medical services, improved security deployment and upgraded spectator facilities along the race route.

Race Director Zack Amodu explained that the shift was a proactive measure rather than a response to any setbacks.

“We are committed to delivering a world-class race experience. By moving the event forward by one week, we can finalise the upgraded support systems we’ve been working on, ensuring participants enjoy the best possible conditions,” he said.

Amodu also revealed that the race’s medical director has recently completed a World Athletics certification programme in Madrid, in compliance with updated global standards. This development makes the Okpekpe race the first in Nigeria to have a World Athletics-certified medical director, further elevating its profile.

The Okpekpe Road Race, recognised as a World Athletics Gold Label event, remains one of Africa’s most prestigious road races, attracting elite athletes from around the world. It was the first race in Nigeria and West Africa to achieve Label status and also the first to have its course measured by a World Athletics-certified measurer.

Organisers emphasised that the rescheduling is intended to enhance the overall quality and prestige of the event, assuring stakeholders that preparations are on course for another successful edition.
