Nigeria’s flagship road running event, the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, has taken another significant step in strengthening its global credentials with the appointment of Dr Sam Ogbondeminu as its medical director for the 11th edition scheduled for 30 May 2026.
Dr Ogbondeminu becomes the first Nigerian to earn certification as a medical director from World Athletics, marking a landmark achievement not only for the race but also for the country’s sports medicine community. His appointment underscores the organisers’ commitment to meeting international standards and maintaining the race’s elite status on the global calendar.
Race director Zack Amodu explained that the decision aligns with updated World Athletics regulations, which now require certified medical professionals to oversee health and safety operations at sanctioned road races. According to Amodu, the Okpekpe race has consistently led the way in compliance and innovation within Nigeria.
“We have built a reputation for adhering strictly to regulatory requirements and setting the benchmark for other races in the country,” Amodu said in an official statement. “This appointment reflects our determination to remain at the forefront of road running in Africa.”
Dr Ogbondeminu, who also serves as medical director at the National Institute for Sports, completed his certification in Madrid during the prestigious Zurich Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Half Marathon in April. His selection was strongly backed by the institute’s Director General, Philip Shaibu, who played a key role in facilitating his training.
The experienced physician previously led the medical and anti-doping sub-committee at the 2024 African Games in Accra and is expected to reprise a similar role at the next edition in Egypt.
Since its inception in 2013, the Okpekpe race has grown into a continental showpiece. It became the first road race in West Africa to receive World Athletics label status in 2015, following the certification of its course. With this latest milestone, it further cements its reputation as a trailblazer in African athletics.
