The Edo State Government on Thursday has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by some individuals and groups to unleash mayhem in Okpella community following a recent court ruling on the area’s traditional leadership dispute.

In a statement issued by the commissioner for public safety and security, Rt. Hon. Festus Ebea, the government said it had received credible intelligence that certain elements, despite earlier warnings, are actively scheming to destabilise the community.

The government expressed concern that the actions of these groups, if unchecked, could plunge Okpella into avoidable violence, stressing that it would not fold its arms while individuals attempt to subvert the judicial process and constituted authority.

Ebea warned that no individual or faction has the right to enforce any court ruling by themselves, particularly as the matter remains subject to appeal, adding that the rule of law must be upheld at all times.

He disclosed that all relevant security agencies have been placed on code red alert, with law enforcement officers already deployed and directed to remain vigilant in monitoring developments across the community.

The commissioner emphasised that any act of self-help, forceful takeover, intimidation, harassment or disruption of the traditional institution by any person or group is illegal, intolerable and will attract immediate and decisive government response.

He, however, urged residents, community leaders and stakeholders in Okpella to remain calm, exercise restraint and allow the judicial process to run its full course without interference.
