The King of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, is facing a lot of heat online after he spoke out against native doctors and traditional Yoruba practices.
In a video that has gone viral, the King asked why anyone would trust a native doctor (Babalawo) with their life. He argued that native doctors cannot perform medical operations like surgery, so people should rely on modern medicine instead.
The King also said that he does not follow traditional religious practices. He explained that he represents God and does not look after shrines or oracles. He told the Yoruba people to stop worshipping “idols,” calling it a “curse” that stops them from moving forward.
“I am a king who represents God. I am not a traditionalist,” he stated. He also told people not to compare Nigeria to countries like China or India that follow traditional religions, claiming that Nigeria is actually greater because of its natural resources.
