Nigerian singer Omah Lay has said the Afrobeats industry is largely centred in Lagos and influenced by the Yoruba ethnic group, making it more difficult for artistes from other regions to gain recognition.
The singer remarked during a listening party for his upcoming album, Clarity of Mind, that musicians outside Lagos face challenges breaking into the mainstream music scene.
According to him, the genre’s strong roots in Lagos have created a situation in which artistes from cities like Port Harcourt must first gain acceptance in the commercial hub before receiving wider recognition.
Omah Lay noted that although the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti was Yoruba and played a major role in shaping the genre only a few artistes from his home city of Port Harcourt have managed to gain significant prominence in the industry.
“There are only two people from Port Harcourt that you know, Burna Boy and me”, he said
The singer added that he has stopped seeking validation from either the global music scene or the Lagos entertainment industry.
“At some point, I told myself I would focus on my family and the fans who truly support me rather than chasing approval from the rest of the world,” he said
Omah Lay explained that his plans are centred on his personal growth, family, and loyal fanbase rather than trying to win broader industry acceptance.
