A Nigerian civil society organization, ACTS For Positive Transformation Initiatives, has called on the Ondo State House of Assembly to swiftly resolve the ongoing leadership crisis by invoking the doctrine of necessity and appointing Deputy Governor Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa as acting governor.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the group expressed concern over the potential consequences of condoning the alleged forgery of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s signature.

They argued that accepting a forged letter transmitting power to the deputy governor would set a dangerous precedent and potentially hinder future legal actions against the forgers.

“Accepting a forged letter would confer legitimacy on the forgery and make it difficult to bring the perpetrators to justice,” said Kolawole Johnson, Head of Research and Strategy for ACTS. “We urge immediate action to appoint the deputy governor as acting governor while simultaneously pursuing justice regarding the forgery allegations.”

The statement acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent intervention in the crisis and his initial call for the invocation of the doctrine of necessity. However, they expressed disappointment with the President’s subsequent acceptance of Babajide Akeredolu’s alternative proposal for a signed letter from Governor Akeredolu himself.

“We believe the President is aware of the Governor’s current health condition and his potential inability to sign any legal documents,” Johnson stated. “Therefore, accepting a forged letter would be unacceptable and could lead to further complications.”

The group proposed alternative solutions, including the use of an electronic signature or the involvement of law enforcement officials to witness the signing process. They emphasized the importance of upholding the law and ensuring transparency in the transition of power.

Furthermore, ACTS For Positive Transformation Initiatives stressed the urgency of addressing the crisis for the benefit of Ondo State and the nation. They emphasized the potential for further instability and corruption if the situation remains unresolved.

“We call upon the Ondo State House of Assembly to act decisively and uphold the principles of good governance and the rule of law,” concluded Johnson. “The immediate appointment of the Deputy Governor as acting governor is crucial to ensure stability and protect the interests of the people.”
