Coventry City midfielder Frank Onyeka is considered a major doubt for this weekend’s Championship fixture against Bristol City after he was forced off during the midweek victory over Stoke City due to a combination of fatigue and a knock.
The 28-year-old, on loan from Brentford, lasted only 10 minutes of the second half at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night.
His early withdrawal followed a challenge earlier in the game, after which he required treatment, ultimately casting uncertainty over his availability for Saturday’s trip to Ashton Gate.
The Sky Blues are aiming for a fifth consecutive league win, but may have to plan without their influential loanee. According to CoventryLive, Onyeka is the sole fresh injury concern from the Stoke match, with manager Frank Lampard otherwise expected to have a fully fit senior squad at his disposal, aside from long-term absentee Oliver Dovin.
The report suggests the midfielder’s substitution was a result of the physical toll of a demanding schedule. Having only recently regained regular minutes following his loan move, the match against Stoke was his third start in the space of eight days.
Lampard confirmed after the game that the Nigerian international was struggling physically, pointing to accumulated fatigue and the earlier challenge as key factors in his decision to substitute him.
“I’m not sure [on his condition]. I think it’s a lot of fatigue and maybe a bit of a knock,” Lampard told CoventryLive. “He was struggling a bit, so he had to come off.”
Since his arrival in early February, Onyeka has quickly become a pivotal figure in Coventry’s midfield, starting four consecutive matches and forging a strong partnership with club captain Matt Grimes.
Such has been his impact that Lampard admitted he took a calculated risk by starting him against Stoke, despite having concerns about his fitness levels beforehand.
“There was a question about playing him, probably, physically, but the influence that he’s had so far meant that he started the game,” the former England midfielder explained.
Coventry head to Bristol City full of confidence, having secured impressive back-to-back away victories against West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield United.
Those results have reinvigorated their promotion push after a difficult spell on the road earlier in the campaign. Should Onyeka be passed fit, he is expected to retain his place alongside Grimes in what has become a settled starting eleven for this pivotal encounter.
