Super Falcons star Francisca Ordega visited survivors of the Yelwata attacks yesterday, engaging with displaced families taking refuge at the Makurdi International Market. The reception was filled with emotion, encouragement, and a powerful message of resilience.
In her remarks, Ordega, fresh from her triumph at the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, dedicated her victory to the displaced persons, stating: “We have won the cup in Morocco, and I dedicate it to you. I have come to weep with you and rejoice with you that God has spared your lives.”
She also donated food and non-food relief items, including rice, beans, guinea corn, soya beans, clean water, nappies, sanitary pads, football jerseys, and sports equipment.
Ordega pledged her support for girls aspiring to pursue careers in football or other ventures, encouraging them with a rallying call for women to seize every opportunity for leadership, stating, “You shall rule the world.”
James Iorpuu, the head of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who received Ordega, commended her humility and national representation, saying, “You are representing not only Benue but the whole country; thank you for bringing honour to us.”
Iorpuu also urged civility in digital spaces, calling on both men and women to refrain from online insults.
Additionally, Raymond Asemakaha, the Group Managing Director of the Benue Investment and Property Company (BIPC), announced a new initiative aimed at training internally displaced persons (IDPs) in business to foster self-reliance, which will commence in September.
Peter Uche, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Katsina/Ala West, urged Ordega to use her platform to highlight the plight of displaced communities in the state. “Take the message of what is happening everywhere you go. The people want to go home; nobody wishes to be in a camp,” he added.
“Your visit marks not just a reunion of sport and service, but a rekindling of hope among the displaced. Your presence will reinforce the belief that even amidst hardship, community, compassion, and courage can light the way forward.”
