Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) said it had impounded 41 vehicles for contravening traffic laws, warning motorists to shun any act of lawlessness.

The agency said the impounded vehicles included three micras, three commercial buses, 17 motorcycles and private vehicles plying one-way, operating illegal garages, and causing severe road obstructions on significant roads in Ibadan.

Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), the executive chairman and chief executive officer of OYRTMA, disclosed this in an interview with journalists after one of the authority’s operations in Ibadan, the state capital. The operation targeted drivers against traffic, traffic light violators, and illegal garages that had been a persistent source of congestion and inconvenience for road users.

The agency’s officials were seen arresting traffic law offenders from the Iwo road underbridge to Ojoo, Sango, Mokola, and Agodi-Gate and ending at the Idi-ape traffic light junction.

Adekoya said that OYRTMA was responsible for maintaining the state’s road traffic laws and maintaining order and control in the state’s road traffic system.

“Today makes it one year in office that I was appointed as the executive chairman of OYRTMA, and instead of sitting in the comfort of my office, we came out to evaluate our enforcement drive.

One of the strategies for road management all over the world is enforcement.

“So what have we done today? We started from the secretariat to the gate and have apprehended many one-way infractions, unlawful parking, and other infractions.”

He said the authorities didn’t just go on the road to look for offenders. He added that they sensitise and educate residents on the dangers attached to traffic laws,” Adekoya said.
