Palestinian Amputee Footballers Stage Symbolic World Cup Final In War-Ravaged Gaza

As the world celebrated the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a group of Palestinian amputee footballers staged a symbolic final in a war-damaged stadium in western Gaza City to draw global attention to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the enclave.

The players, many of whom lost limbs during the Israel-Hamas conflict, wore the jerseys of World Cup finalists Spain and Argentina in a powerful display of resilience and hope. The team representing Spain won the symbolic match 3-1.

The exhibition came as the actual FIFA World Cup concluded on Sunday, with Spain defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time to claim its second World Cup title.

Speaking to AFP in a video shared on its X handle on Monday, referee Hossam Al-Hajj said the event was intended to highlight the devastating impact of the war on Gaza’s sporting community and infrastructure.

“Many athletes were targeted in this war, and all the stadiums were destroyed and turned into places for the displaced,” Al-Hajj said.

“Our message is that we are a people who deserve to live, and a people who want to play and practice sports and football like the rest of the world.”

He called for the reconstruction of Gaza’s sporting facilities and broader infrastructure.

“We want stadiums, we want infrastructure to be repaired, we want Gaza rebuilt,” he added.

Despite the symbolic football match, violence continued outside the stadium.

According to AFP, an Israeli airstrike killed 11 people, including three members of the same family.

One survivor, Umm Mohammed Abu Asr, recounted the attack that claimed the lives of her husband, daughter and brother.

“They fired shells at us and I fled with my seven daughters,” she said.

“My brother, my husband and my other daughter stayed behind, and a shell hit their tent, and they were burned inside it.”

She also described how another daughter was killed while attempting to return to the family’s tent to rescue her children.

“My daughter was at the door of a neighbour’s house. When she went back to get her children, she was hit in the head by a shell.

“What can I say? My brother, my daughter and my husband were killed,” she lamented.

According to AFP, at least 1,155 Palestinians have been killed since the Israel-Hamas truce collapsed last October, as the conflict continues to exact a heavy toll on civilians and critical infrastructure across Gaza.
