Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon Ho is set to release his debut animation project, ‘Ally’, in 2027.
The filmmaker has been working on the script since 2019, and co-wrote it with Jason Yu (Sleep). It represents a significant new creative direction after a career built on live-action cinema.
‘Ally’ tells the story of a piglet squid named Ally who lives in the depths of the South Pacific Ocean, harbouring ambitions to reach the surface and one day feature in a wildlife documentary. Her world is upended when an aircraft goes down into the sea, setting her on an unlikely journey upward alongside a mismatched group of companions.
The film is expected to wrap in the first half of 2027, with a worldwide theatrical release planned for the same year.
The animation draws on talent from several countries, including Animation Supervisor Jae Hyung Kim (Toy Story 4, Inside Out), Supervising Producer David Lipman (Shrek), and Franchise and Production Designer Marcin Jakubowski (Klaus). VFX and animation company DNEG, whose feature credits include ‘Inception’ and ‘Dune’, is contributing 3D animation.
Pathe will release ‘Ally’ theatrically internationally in France, Benelux, Switzerland, and West Africa, and will handle sales outside Japan, China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. CJ ENM and Penture Invest will manage distribution in South Korea, Vietnam, Turkey, and Indonesia.
