The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Osun State has expressed concern over the ability of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to conduct a free, fair and credible elections in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

The parties however called upon the Osun State House of Assembly to intervene and prompt OSSIEC to adhere to constitutional obligations within a reasonable timeframe.

A statement signed by Pastor Victor Akande, Mr. Oluseye Odesola, Dr. Gbenga Afeni, chairman, secretary and publicity secretary respectfully and made available to journalists in Osogbo yesterday.

The body said the move by OSSIEC, since the announcement of plans to conduct the elections as a political game orchestrated by the electoral body to manipulate the electoral process.

IPAC noted that despite OSSIEC’s recent publication in the Nigeria Tribune on February 19, 2024, announcing plans to conduct local government elections within set guidelines and schedules, there is lack of concrete action on the ground.

“IPAC members closely monitored OSSIEC’s actions and noted with concern the commission’s apparent attempt to manipulate the electoral process. It was evident when OSSIEC scheduled a crucial meeting with political party chairmen on Valentine’s Day, perhaps in hopes that the chairmen would be unavailable.

“However, in a display of commitment and responsibility, 15 out of 19 political parties attended the meeting, urging OSSIEC to ensure a fair and level playing field for all parties.

“Despite the promising leadership at OSSIEC, including a dynamic chairman and commissioners, IPAC observed a lack of concrete action on the ground.

“The commission’s publication mentioned a mere 42 working days for party primaries to commence, failing to reference relevant electoral laws or guidelines that should guide their operations.

“IPAC is deeply concerned that OSSIEC’s approach signals a reluctance to conduct transparent and credible elections, adding that the lack of communication with political parties since the initial meeting raises further doubts about OSSIEC’s commitment to a fair electoral process,” the parties said.
