Party Crisis, Defections Won’t Weaken Taraba PDP– Obidah

The acting chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Hon. Bitrus Obidah, has said that the ongoing leadership crisis as well as the recent detections of some members will not in any way weaken the party’s strength in the state.

Briefing newsmen on the recent political happenings in the state, Hon. Obidah, dismissed claims of divisions and factional group within the party.

He insisted that the PDP remains united, politically strong and well rooted across despite recent defections and the leadership crisis at the national level.

He noted that, although the PDP is currently facing leadership disputes at the national level, the situation has not created divisions within the party in the state.

According to him, the PDP still enjoys widespread grassroots support and retains the strong political structures it has built since becoming the ruling party in the state in 1999.

“Despite the defection of the state governor and some other political figures, the PDP remains strong in Taraba State. Our structures across the state are intact and continue to function effectively.

“Some of the politicians who recently left the party for the APC were already exploring the possibility and options of returning after discovering that the ruling party had become overcrowded.

“Our doors are open to those who wish to return. Many of them have realised that the PDP remains the most organised and people-oriented party in Taraba State,” Obidah said.

He faulted the constitution of the caretaker committee, saying that there is no justification for establishing any caretaker committee when a duly elected leadership is already in place.

“We do not have factions in Taraba PDP. The leadership currently in place was legally elected and its tenure has not expired. Any claim of a parallel structure is baseless,” he said.

Obidah further assured party members that the PDP would provide a level playing field for aspirants ahead of future elections.

He advised all those interested in contesting elective positions to return to their communities and build support at the grassroots, as the party would not impose any candidate on the people.

“The era of imposition and manipulation is over. Anyone who wants to contest must engage the people and earn their support. We will ensure credible candidates emerge through a transparent process,” he said.
