Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced the approval of N4.17 billion for the six area councils to facilitate the payment of wages to council workers.

Wike called on the chairmen of the councils to take immediate action and ensure that the workers receive their due salaries.

He emphasised the importance of a motivated workforce for effective public service and national development.

“A well-supported workforce is essential,” he stated, addressing the ongoing strike by area council workers over unpaid minimum wages.

The minister also discussed ongoing initiatives to enhance the working conditions of area council teachers, citing improvements such as school renovations and better access to educational materials.

Reflecting on this year’s Workers’ Day theme, “Reclaiming the Civic Space amid Economic Hardship,” Wike noted the significance of upholding worker rights and fostering dialogue, particularly in challenging times.

“The civic space must not shrink in hardship; it should expand through partnership and mutual respect,” he said.

While reaffirming the Administration’s commitment to worker welfare, the minister urged Area Councils to pay the new minimum wage and any outstanding arrears promptly.

“We have made staff welfare a top priority since assuming office. From prompt salary and pension payments to capacity development and office upgrades, our focus has been to ensure every worker feels valued and supported,” he said.

Wike enumerated the swift implementation of the new salary structure, the recruitment of 60 doctors for residency training, renovations of government offices, and plans for staff regularisation and promotion exercises.

The minister praised all workers for their sacrifices and resilience, underscoring that their dedication is vital for creating a better future for the FCT and Nigeria.
