Former spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a political platform that is no longer redeemable, declaring that the party has “gone” beyond repair and lacks a clear vision for governance.
Speaking on Thursday on Arise News, Baba-Ahmed said the PDP has failed to articulate credible alternatives to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that the party was drifting without direction.
“The PDP is drifting away. I think it is gone, and I do not believe anyone can fix it,” Baba-Ahmed said.
He challenged the opposition party to clearly outline its plans for Nigerians rather than merely positioning itself against President Bola Tinubu.
“Ask them today what they will do, beyond just opposing and hoping they can unseat President Tinubu; they won’t tell you,” he added.
According to him, a serious opposition should be able to present a concrete agenda to Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Somebody in this party should be saying to Nigerians, if you trust us in 2027, these are the things we will do,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed stressed that rebuilding a credible opposition would require massive recruitment of competent and credible politicians across party lines, as well as being united by a shared vision for Nigeria’s future.
“They must embark on massive recruitment of credible politicians, including colleagues who will come from other parties, rallying around the opposition and designing a future for this country,” he stated.
While noting that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) currently holds the potential to emerge as a viable opposition to the APC, Baba-Ahmed warned the party against repeating the mistakes of older political platforms.
He said the ADC must project a fresh image and offer Nigerians new ideas and leadership styles.
“We don’t want to see the same old politicians coming forward with the same promises,” he cautioned.
Emphasising the role of young voters in future elections, Baba-Ahmed noted that the political space must reflect their aspirations.
“Sixty per cent of Nigerians who will be voting are young people. They want new people, new faces, and new energies,” he said.
