PDP Says Electoral Victory Lies With Voters, Not Political Bigwigs

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that its chances of winning elections depend largely on eligible voters rather than political heavyweights, noting that while the influence of party leaders is an advantage, true power lies with the electorate.

The chairman of the PDP in Ondo State, Modupe Aisida, stated this on Thursday in Akure, the State capital.

Aisida acknowledged that several PDP members, including governors, had defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but insisted that the PDP’s real strength remains with the people.

He cited the outcome of the 2023 presidential election as evidence, noting that former Lagos State governor and incumbent President Bola Tinubu lost presidential election in Lagos State, alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“People were surprised because nobody saw it coming. Tinubu also lost in Osun State, his home state, during the presidential election. That shows the power of the people,” he said.

According to him, political parties should focus on building strong institutions rather than elevating individuals.

“That is why we should stop building strongmen. Whether you are a governor or not, if institutions are strong, people will exercise their franchise and make their choice known,” Aisida said.

He added that he was not concerned about politicians who had left the party, stating that many rose to prominence through the PDP. “They rode on the shoulders of the party; we worked for them. But we have moved on, even nationally. It’s good for the system. Let’s see how strong and popular they are in the next election if we have a free and fair process,” he said.

Aisida maintained that many defections to the APC were driven by selfish interests and stressed the need to educate voters on the importance of their electoral power.

“People must be enlightened to stop selling their votes during elections. Power belongs to the people, not politicians,” he added.
