The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South West has dismissed reports suggesting that it has scheduled congresses across the region, describing the claims as false and misleading.
The party’s South West zonal publicity secretary, Sanya Atofarati, in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti, urged party members and the public to disregard any timetable or announcement circulating about planned congresses in the zone.
“At no time has the party approved or announced any state congress in the South West,” Atofarati said, labelling the reports as “false and mischievous.”
The clarification comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, which recently split into two factions. One faction is led by Samuel Anyanwu, while the other is under the leadership of Taminu Turaki (SAN).
Atofarati explained that most states in the region do not require fresh congresses, noting that five of the six South West states already have duly elected and legally constituted state executives.
“The only exception is Osun State, where a caretaker committee was validly appointed by the National Working Committee in January 2026,” he stated.
He further described the circulating timetable as a “sham,” allegedly being promoted by expelled individuals who no longer have legitimacy within the party.
“Having been lawfully removed by the national convention, the party’s highest decision-making organ, their desperate bid to cause confusion will fail,” Atofarati added.
Under the leadership of national chairman Taminu Turaki, he maintained, the PDP remains committed to rebuilding the party based on discipline, unity, and internal democracy.
The party also called on members across the South West to participate actively in the ongoing membership registration and validation exercise at ward and local government levels, describing it as crucial to strengthening party structures ahead of future democratic engagements.
