A Nigerian peace and security advocate, Jim Okolo, has paid tribute to former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as he marks his 89th birthday.
In a statement, Okolo described Obasanjo as a statesman whose leadership and commitment to national development had continued to shape Nigeria and influence governance across Africa.
Okolo, who has served as regional director for peace and conflict resolution in West Africa with the International Human Rights Protection Service in the United States, said Obasanjo’s years in public service — first as military Head of State and later as a democratically elected president — were marked by reforms that strengthened governance and economic management in the country.
He also noted the former president’s role in promoting peace and democracy across the African continent, particularly through mediation efforts in conflict situations and his engagement with regional and international institutions.
According to him, Obasanjo’s contributions extend beyond Nigeria, and the former president has remained an influential voice in global discussions on Africa’s development through platforms such as the United Nations and the African Union.
Okolo said the former president’s legacy is reflected in the institutions he helped build and the leaders he has inspired over the years.
“At 89, Baba Obasanjo remains a symbol of wisdom and service. His life continues to demonstrate that leadership is about sacrifice, vision and dedication to the greater good,” he said.
He added that Obasanjo’s commitment to peace, human rights and security cooperation has inspired many leaders working in those areas.
Okolo prayed for continued strength and good health for the former president, noting that Nigeria and Africa have much to celebrate in his decades of service.
He said Obasanjo’s example would continue to inspire future generations of leaders committed to peace, justice and national development.
