Omirenya Peculiar is the founder and creative mind behind Brandpeculiar, a modern men’s wear brand that focuses on originality, cultural style, unique fashion trends, and everyday confidence.
Brandpeculiar creates distinct pieces ranging from casual two-piece sets and beachwear to traditional Nigerian outfits like Agbada and Kaftan, designed to help men look stylish and stand out effortlessly while preserving the core essence of Nigerian culture.
Peculiar shared what motivated her to venture into the fashion industry, saying, “I have always been an avid lover of fashion and learning about styles, designs and the whole sewing process as a young child from my Mother. It was a clear career path to follow. I launched Brandpeculiar because I noticed many men struggled to find fashion pieces that are stylish, comfortable, and expressive. I wanted to create a brand that stands out something ‘peculiar,’ just like the name.”
A graduate of Babcock University, she recounted her business journey: saying: “Brandpeculiar’s success story is one of passion, determination, hardwork and steady growth.
“I started the brand alone with the goal of creating unique, stylish menswear, and through consistent creativity, quality pieces, and authentic content, the brand gradually gained attention.
“The business quickly gained momentum. We get high customer satisfaction and this resulted in many referrals, as people couldn’t stop talking about the unique style and exceptional quality of the clothing.
Because this brand stands out, we now have customers not only at home in Nigeria but also abroad, which significantly expand our reach, “ she said.
Peculiar also mentioned that because of the rapid growth, they now have a physical presence and an expansion of the team. “We successfully opened a walk-in store, and as a result, we employed workers who now have stable sources of income. These employees no longer have to wait or struggle to find a formal government or office job, which is contributing to the economy and helping to reduce the number of people in the labour market seeking employment, “ she stressed.
Lucrativity
When discussing profitability, Peculiar noted, “Fashion in Nigeria is very profitable and growing fast. People value style and cultural expression, creating strong demand for both casual and traditional wear. Many Nigerians are willing to pay for quality, stylish, and well-fitted clothing and with the international fashion community taking interest in Nigerian fashion, it opens doors for international business as well.”
Challenges
Peculiar also discussed challenges, highlighting difficulties in finding talented team members who understand her vision and goals to deliver excellent outfits. “Major challenges we faced as a fashion entrepreneur in this part of the world is finding the right talent that understands your vision and align with your goals to provide excellent outfits.”
To her, “another one we faced as a sole proprietor is funding. Applying for grants helps alleviate the burden and makes running business a bit easier, but that is not easy to come by, even now that we are witnessing low funding drought, and I think it’s a global issue. The politics of the West also affects Nigeria.”
Advice
“My piece of advice to those who would like to come into the business space is to stay relentlessness. You must chase your goals not just with enthusiasm, but with determination. There will be setbacks, but your capacity to push through those moments of doubt is what ultimately separates success stories from failures, “ she pointed out.
She continued; “Also, hold firmly to your core vision. In the noise of the market and the pressure of changing trends, your initial purpose is your compass. Let that vision guide every major decision, from product development to customer service. If you lose sight of why you started, the path forward becomes obscured.
“And finally, never compromise on your standards. Consistency and integrity are not just buzzwords, they are the bedrock of trust and reputation. Whether it’s the quality of your product, the honesty of your communication, or the ethics of your operations, maintaining a high standard is what will truly set your brand apart and secure the lasting loyalty of your customers.”
